Rabbit Hole Hay, Ultra Premium Alfalfa; 10lb box
$42.66Add to cartWhat is Alfalfa Hay? While its commonly referred to as Alfalfa Hay, its actually a legume (beanstalk). Full of protein and nutrients, its perfect for growing rabbits between the ages of 3 weeks and 7 months. Since Alfalfa Hay is a legume, beanstalk, it has a thicker stem and many leaves that are more elliptical in shape compared to the long leaves found on grass hays. The leaves run all along the thick and pliable stock. Alfalfa Hay is higher in both protein and calcium and lower in fiber than grass hays, which allows it to be a mainstay of your young rabbit, guinea pig, or chinchillas diet. Itll help them grow and put on weight while maintaining a healthy digestive system. Yet, because of how high it is in protein and calcium there is an age at which youll need to transition them off of Alfalfa Hay and onto a grass hay (such as Timothy or Orchard). While they will no longer get to have an unlimited amount of Alfalfa Hay, it does make a great treat for adult rabbits, guinea pigs, and chinchillas. Importance of Transitioning From Alfalfa Hay Alfalfa Hay is perfect for rabbits younger than 7 months, guinea pigs younger than 6 months, and chinchillas younger than a year. Its crucial that you transition your small pet to a grass hay as soon as they are old enough, otherwise theyll end up facing major health issues such as obesity, digestion and urinary tract issues, along with an increase risk of bladder stones. In order to keep a healthy diet, veterinarians recommend that adult rabbits, 7 months and older, and adult guinea pigs, 6 months and older, transition to a diet consisting of 80% grass hay. Adult chinchillas, older than a year, should have a diet consisting of 75% grass hay. Again, while Alfalfa Hay can no longer be a mainstay of their adult diet, it does make a fantastic treat for them. Feeding Your Rabbit Based on Their Age From birth until adulthood, its crucial that you feed your rabbit specific hays and other foods based on how old they are. To keep your baby rabbit happy and healthy as they grow, use the feeding timeline below to help guide you in your purchasing of hay and other foods. Birth 3 weeks: Mothers Milk 3 4 weeks: Mothers Milk, nibbles of Alfalfa Hay and Pellets 4 7 weeks: Mothers Milk, access to Alfalfa Hay and Pellets 7 weeks 7 months: Unlimited Pellets and Alfalfa Hay (plus see 12 weeks below) 12 weeks: Introduce vegetables (one at a time, quantities under oz.) When your rabbit is older than 6 months, youll need to start transitioning them from Alfalfa Hay to a grass hay such as Timothy or Orchard (any cut will work). Youll need to decrease the amount of Pellets to cup for every 6 pounds of body weight of your rabbit. While you are transitioning them to grass hays and decreasing their pellet intake, you can gradually increase their daily vegetables (green ones) and give treats in moderation. These traditions will help keep your rabbits GI tract healthy and avoid obesity.

Rabbit Hole Hay, Ultra Premium Coarse Orchard Grass; 5lb box
$31.98Add to cartWhat is Coarse Orchard Grass? Coarse Orchard Grass is high in fiber and low in both protein and calcium. Its very similar to First Cut Timothy in texture, making it perfect if you or your rabbit, guinea pig, or chinchilla are allergic to Timothy Hay but are still looking for a coarse style hay to help with their teeth and digestion. Coarse Orchard Grass provides a strong balance of roughage and nutrition for rabbits, guinea pigs, and chinchillas. Its larger seed heads, leaves, and stems make it coarser providing long strands that promote natural chewing behavior. Its an important staple of your rabbits diet because it helps wear down their teeth. The long strand fibers also helps to keep your rabbits digestion regular and functioning properly. Allergic to Timothy Hay? Orchard Grass is a great solution Allergies, especially to Timothy Hay are common (you arent alone!). Coarse Orchard Grass can be a wonderful alternative for you and your small pet while still giving them all the important nutrients they need. In our experience, people who are allergic to Timothy Hay are less allergic to our Coarse Orchard Grass. While many veterinarians recommend Timothy Hay as the best type of hay, Orchard Grass is a good substitute if you or your small pet have issues with Timothy Hay. We are dedicated to making sure your pets are happy, healthy, and well fed even when allergies are an issue. Why Hay is Essential to Their Diet For rabbits 7 months and older, grass hay is an important staple of their diet. While pellets and some vegetables may be safe for young bunnies, and as occasional treats for mature rabbits, grass hay should make up 80% of their diet. This most closely resembles the natural feeding habits of rabbits in the wild and promotes proper digestion and dental health. The constant foraging and grazing encouraged by hay helps to keep rabbits physically active and mentally stimulated. Orchard Grass is high in fiber and low in both protein and calcium content, which is ideal for keeping the digestive tracts of rabbits and other small animals functioning properly. Coarse Orchard Grass can be fed free-choice to your rabbits, guinea pigs, chinchillas and other small animals, and should be a mainstay of any small herbivores diet. Free-choice feeding means that the hay is constantly available, and the animals can balance their own diet, without increased risk of weight gain or digestion issues. Hay for Your Picky Eater Do you struggle to get your small pet to eat hay? Theyll go crazy for our Coarse Orchard Grass and gobble it right up. One of the reasons people and their small pets love Soft Orchard Grass is because it is the softest hay we carry. There are almost no seed heads and few stems, leaving just soft blades of hay, which makes it that much easier for your rabbit, guinea pig, or chinchilla to eat. Youll no longer have to worry about making sure that your picky eater is eating the amount of hay they need to have a healthy digestive system.
